Mitos dan Fakta Tentang HIV/AIDS yang Perlu Anda Ketahui !

Organisasi dunia penanggulangan AIDS (UNAIDS) menyatakan Indonesia merupakan salah satu negara yang memiliki peningkatan tercepat dalam kasus HIV/AIDS di Asia. Sungguh pun demikian namun pemahaman masyarakat akan penyakit HIV/AIDS masih sangat rendah. Berbagai mitos yang salah masih dianggap sebagai kebenaran sehingga menimbulkan stigma dan diskriminasi.


Untuk lebih memahami penyakit ini, simak mitos seputar HIV/AIDS dan temukan faktanya.

HIV sama dengan AIDS

Fakta: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) adalah virus yang menghancurkan sel imun tubuh CD4, ini adalah sel yang melawan penyakit. Dengan terapi pengobatan yang baik, seseorang bisa terinfeksi HIV selama bertahun-tahun tanpa berkembang menjadi AIDS.

Seseorang didiagnosa AIDS ketika terjadi penurunan sistem imun yang bermanifestasi dengan munculnya berbagai penyakit opotunistik keganasan, misalnya TBC, herpes, toksoplasma, dan masih banyak lagi. Pada fase ini, penyakit flu pun bisa menyebabkan kematian.

HIV dan AIDS adalah penyakit homoseksual dan PSK

Fakta: Sebagian besar orang dengan HIV/AIDS (ODHA) adalah heteroseksual (berhubungan seks dengan lawan jenis) serta para pengguna narkoba jarum suntik. Data di Indonesia pada tahun 2011 76,3 persen kasus AIDS baru didapatkan dari penularan seks heteroseksual.

HIV/AIDS bisa menular lewat kontak biasa

Fakta: Kita tidak akan tertular atau menyebarkan HIV hanya dengan memeluk, mencium, berjabat tangan, atau menggunakan handuk yang sama dengan ODHA. Transmisi virus HIV hanya terjadi melalui hubungan seks beresiko tanpa kondom, menggunakan jarum suntik yang sama, serta penularan dari ibu kepada bayi.

HIV/AIDS adalah penyakit kutukan Tuhan

Fakta: Penyakit ini menular melalui darah, hubungan seksual, dan dari ibu ke bayi. Penyakit ini bisa mengenai siapa saja; pria, wanita, bayi, dewasa, homoseksual, atau heteroseksual.

Positif HIV berarti akan segera meninggal

Fakta: Setiap orang yang positif HIV memiliki ketahanan tubuh berbeda-beda. Ada sebagian orang yang perjalanan infeksi HIV menjadi AIDS berlangsung puluhan tahun dan hidup normal, seperti Magic Johnson. Tetapi ada juga yang baru hitungan bulan sudah terkena AIDS. Saat ini tersedia obat untuk memperlambat laju perkembangan virus, yakni terapi ARV (antiretroviral).
